Patrick Mahomes Has 'Extreme Confidence' in Chiefs WRs amid Adams, Cooper Trades
October 16, 2024
The Kansas City Chiefs didn't add to their receiver room during what was an eventful day of trades on Tuesday, but Patrick Mahomes is happy with the group he has.
The star quarterback said he feels good with the Chiefs' current receivers after Davante Adams and Amari Cooper, two of the top receivers on the trade market, went to the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, respectively.
"I have extreme confidence with the guys that are on that football field,'' Mahomes said, per ESPN's Adam Teicher. "They've won games, they've won Super Bowls, they've made plays in big moments and Brett Veach has done a great job of bringing players in that can step up whenever their number is called.
"Every time I step on that football field, I feel like we have the best ability to win, and I think that's a credit to Brett Veach and coach [Andy] Reid bringing in guys that really get after it and put in the work to be great every single day.''
Through five games this season, injuries have already taken a toll on the Chiefs' receiving corps. Rashee Rice suffered a torn LCL in Week 4 and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Hollywood Brown, an offseason addition, was placed on the injured reserve in September because of a shoulder injury that needs surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season.
Rice is the Chiefs' leading receiver with 288 receiving yards on 24 receptions despite playing just three games and a few plays of Kansas City's Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Brown, who injured his shoulder in preseason, has not played this season.
With Rice and Brown out, the Chiefs' top receiving options are rookie Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Justin Watson. Mecole Hardman, who caught the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, is another option.
Worthy, a first-round pick out of Texas, has 12 receptions for 179 yards and a pair of touchdowns along with 42 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Smith-Schuster had a slow start to the season but now has 147 receiving yards and a touchdown after a big game against the New Orleans Saints where he racked up 130 yards on seven receptions.
While Mahomes feels confident in his wideouts right now, the Chiefs still have time to add some depth before the Nov. 5 trade deadline if they feel they need it.
For now, they'll set their sights on staying undefeated as they face the San Francisco 49ers fresh off their bye week on Sunday.
